The Mokushi-e Ceremony

The Mokushi-e Ceremony in Nichiren Shoshu temples is a significant annual event with a dual purpose:

1. Memorial for Third High Priest Nichimoku Shonin

• Purpose: It is the Memorial Ceremony for the Third High Priest, Nichimoku Shonin (1290–1333).

• Date: It is typically observed on November 15th each year.

• Significance: The ceremony conveys sincere gratitude for Nichimoku Shonin's unparalleled efforts to widely spread Nichiren Daishonin's teachings for all people. He played a crucial role in the lineage of Nichiren Shoshu by being appointed the successor by the Second High Priest, Nikko Shonin, which is a pivotal point in the transmission of the True Law.

2. Children's Ceremony (Shichi-go-san)

• Connection: Since November 15th is traditionally the date for the Japanese children's celebration known as Shichi-go-san (Seven-Five-Three), the Mokushi-e Ceremony also carries a strong emphasis on the children of the faith.

• Hopes: It includes prayers for the children of tomorrow, expressing the hope that they will grow up to be as strong in faith, wisdom, and knowledge of Buddhism as Nichimoku Shonin, thus continuing the heritage of faith and contributing to the worldwide propagation of the Daishonin's Buddhism (Kosen-rufu).
